In this guide, I’ve included my tried-and-true favourites and some of the best cafés in Kingston, along with some bucket-list spots I can’t wait to try. Even if you don’t drink coffee, you’ll find plenty of delicious options: rich hot chocolate, freshly baked treats, all-day brunch, and cozy nooks to linger in.

Juniper Cafe on King Street

Tucked right on the waterfront, Juniper Café is my personal favourite for its unbeatable atmosphere. On a sunny day, sitting on their outdoor patio with a view of Lake Ontario feels like a mini vacation — the kind where time slows down and the only thing on your agenda is enjoying the moment. In the summer, the breeze off the water pairs perfectly with one of their fresh pastries and a cold drink. When the weather turns chilly, you’ll find me inside, wrapped up in the warm, inviting atmosphere with a rich hot chocolate in hand.

Juniper Cafe Terra Verde

Located in Kingston’s west end, Juniper Café Terra Verde is a newer addition to the Juniper family. While I haven’t visited yet, I’ve heard great things about the welcoming atmosphere, seasonal drinks, and delectable pastries. It’s an excellent option for those who want a cozy Kingston café experience outside of downtown.

Even from afar, this location is known for its bright, airy interior, warm service, and quality baked goods. I’ve added it to my personal café bucket list and can’t wait to stop by for a hot chocolate and a quiet moment on their patio.

Balzac's Coffee Roasters

Located in the heart of Kingston’s historic downtown, Balzac’s Coffee Roasters brings a touch of Parisian café culture to the city. Inspired by the grand cafés of Paris, the space is designed to reflect both the cultural nuances and historical significance of its surroundings. Inside, you’ll find a warm, welcoming ambiance with plenty of bright, comfortable seating. It's perfect for lingering over a latte, catching up with friends, or enjoying a quiet moment to yourself. Whether you’re stopping by for a rich espresso or a freshly baked treat, Balzac’s combines charm, history, and quality in one cozy downtown spot.

Crave Coffee House

Crave Coffee House is a downtown gem, ideal for anyone looking for a cozy spot to relax or work. I’ve visited for their decadent hot chocolate and a cookie, both of which were absolutely delicious. The café features comfortable seating, a welcoming atmosphere, and free Wi-Fi, making it perfect for catching up on a book, chatting with friends, or even a casual work session.

Pan Chancho Bakery & Café

Pan Chancho is a downtown favourite, beloved for its artisanal breads, fresh pastries, and all-day brunch menu. When you visit you'll find their charming storefront with gourmet food and baked goods, and a dine-in café. They also have a secluded patio tucked behind the café. I haven't tried the patio yet, but I’m excited to visit soon, for a treat and a drink or for brunch!

The Elm Café

The Elm Café has earned rave reviews for its cozy interior, charming patio, and thoughtful menu. While I haven’t visited yet, it’s on my bucket list because of its reputation for creating an inviting space to enjoy brunch, pastries, and a hot drink. Reviewers rave about The Elm Café for its consistently excellent food, charming and quiet atmosphere, and welcoming service. A helpful tip: seating is limited, so plan to arrive early to snag a spot.

Lay Low Café

Lay Low Café is on my personal bucket list, and for good reason! Reviewers praise its cute, delightful atmosphere with bright, earthy décor, green couches, high ceilings, and even a fun disco ball. The café serves all-day brunch with a wide variety of options, including choices that accommodate dietary restrictions, making it a great spot for almost anyone.

It’s located downtown, so it’s easy to combine a visit with a stroll through Kingston’s shops or waterfront. Just a heads-up: seating is limited and there are no reservations, so you might need to wait during busy hours but reviewers say the welcoming vibe and excellent food make it worth it!
